A Chinese company has donated some funds for the Lao government to build schools for ethnic children in the north.
The President of the Kings Romans Group Co., Ltd, Mr Zhao Wei, presented the funds to Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh during an official ceremony at the Prime Minister's Office in Vientiane on Friday, which was also attended by National Assembly member and President of the Young Entrepreneurs Association, Mr Ousavanh Thiengthepvongsa.
The funds amounting to 3.4 billion kip (US$360,000) will be used to build 16 schools in the northern provinces of Phongsaly, Oudomxay, Luang Namtha and Bokeo. Each province will receive four schools, according to a press release from the company, and these will provide places for specific ethnic groups.
The Kings Romans Group Co., Ltd is one of several Chinese companies planning to invest large amounts of the money in developing economic zones and tourist sites in Laos .
The Lao government has granted a land concession of 827 hectares to the Chinese firms in the triangle area between Laos Myammar and Thailand , in Tonpheung district, Bokeo province.
The company plans to invest more than US$86 million in developing tourism facilities in the zone this year.
